Excerpt: In April 1990, the Indian River Lagoon system (IRL) was designated an estuary of national significance by the National Estuary Program (NEP) of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This lagoonal system extends 250 km along the east coast of central Florida (Fig. 1) and is home to 700 species of fish (Gilmore, 1985), as well as the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus).... Forty three locations were sampled for sediments and dissolved metals in water. Clams were found and collected at 22 of these locations...
